The Southampton International Boat Show is back, and this year it’s anticipated to be bigger and better. Join the fun at Mayflower Park from 16-25 September 2022 as Southampton Boat Show celebrates its’ 53rd edition of the show.

The Monaco Yacht Show (MYS) is an annual international show dedicated to the world of superyachts.

Inaugurated in 1991, the show is held over four days in late September in the Port Hercule of Monaco.

The MYS is divided into two main exhibition areas: afloat and on the quayside. Afloat, +100 superyachts and +50 luxury tenders are displayed by the most renowned builders and brokers in the market.

After a 2-year pause, this Channel Island boat show will once again take place at St Helier Marina adjacent to Weighbridge Place.  Renowned for being a key event in the Channel Islands’ diary, it offers an array of yachting and lifestyle exhibitors on and off the water along with an Outdoor & Active zone, refreshments and music and attracts 30,000 visitors.  Hosted by the Ports of Jersey, this is a free-entry boat show.

Quay Boats will have a number of boats on display, including Princess V40, Axopar 22, 28 & 37XC, Nord Star 31+, Bayliner VR4, Rand day boats and Rupert Marine Ribs. We will also have a selection of SUR tenders, Jobe watersports equipment and much more. All availability is extremely limited so book the date in to not be disappointed!

The Barclays Jersey Boat Show will celebrate its 14th anniversary in 2022. Organised by Ports of Jersey with the operational support of local specialists, 3D Events, the three-day show will once again take place in and around St Helier Marina and nearby Weighbridge Place.

First staged in 2008 as a means of showcasing the local marine industry, the event has since gone on to great success and remains the largest free-entry event in the Channel Islands. The show regularly records attendance figures in excess of 30,000+ visitors over the three days.

The programme of activities is still at the planning stages but will once again include opportunities for the public to step on board a number of yachts and watercraft berthed in St Helier Marina while an array of lifestyle and marine accessories exhibitors, local artisans, food and refreshment stalls will be lined up along the adjacent quaysides. There will also be a full on stage entertainment programme and activities specifically for children.
The Royal Navy has been a regular participant at the annual show since it first started and next year will be no exception; strengthening the close relationship it enjoys with the Island.

The refreshed Axopar 28 just gets better & better

Having epitomized Axopar’s brand values since day one, the Axopar 28 remains pivotal to the ongoing success of the company.

This accomplished and well established concept still sells extremely well in all corners of the world, with customers buying the Cabin, T-Top or Open versions as they continue to adore the 28’s multifunctional use, its stunning performance, intuitive handling, cool looks, and unbeatable value for money across the entire range.
Such is the enduring popularity of the Axopar 28, that a series of carefully orchestrated, customer-led improvements and an updated options list for the 2021 Model Year are intended to bring the 28 more in-line with the look and feel of the all new Axopar 37 range.

Sleek & intuitive helm design

Foremost amongst these changes is a new driver’s console, with associated navigation and driver aids. In a quest to unify electronic systems across all Axopar models, Simrad® technology will replace the Axopar 28’s previously used Garmin instrumentation.

The best of these new instrumentation options for the Axopar 28 is a marginally wider and more expansive, full width ‘Glass Helm Information Display.’

The multi-functional display avoids the need for fragmented instrumentation and randomly located switch gear, by replacing this with a clean and modern looking, full glass, bespoke graphic user-interface screen.

The Simrad® IDS system (Dual 12”) with custom glass screen, is an integral aspect of the boat’s overall design. Driver focused and OEM brand specific, it offers integrated vessel start-up check, eco/sport driving modes with active driving-assist features, entertainment and media control and monitoring via a simple touch-screen display. The system integration incorporates Mercury Marine outboard engines as well.

Enchanted with striking exterior updates

Externally, the Axopar 28 Cabin roof will feature a new design with integrated gunwales, and further incentivised by the strong, outdoors ‘adventure’ theme, an optional roof rack to bring along customers’ outdoors equipment, like bicycles, kayaks and SUP boards to mention but a few.

The 28’s rub rail protection around the outside of the hull has been improved. Similar to the Axopar 37, protection now includes an additional rub rail around the edge of the revised swim platforms, as standard. The standard colour for this will be grey, or black on boats with ‘BRABUS Line trim package’ visual upgrades.

The swim platforms have increased in size, and boarding from the water is now significantly easier, courtesy of a new (optional), high-handle ladder, when added to the starboard side.

YachtQuarters owners purchase a share in a fully managed new or nearly new Princess motor yacht based in Mallorca.

What does it cost?

The simple answer is a lot less than the cost of either running your own boat or chartering a similar craft. The new Princess X95 establishes a new ‘Superfly’ X Class, re-imagining the concept of a flybridge yacht with extensive outdoor space and innovative configuration, making the most of every inch of space on board.

The X95 was developed as a collaboration between Bernard Olesinski and legendary Italian styling house Pininfarina, boasting luxury and comfort with clean and elegant styling and form.

Her new hull, which was designed exclusively by Olesinski, evolves the original deep-V concept to provide 15% improved efficiency with outstanding stability and sea-keeping. Having delivered the styling for the revolutionary R35, Pininfarina worked in collaboration with Olesinski to craft a statement yacht focused on adventure – the ultimate in contemporary yet highly functional yacht architecture.

With both main and fly decks that extend virtually the entire length of the yacht, allied to an enclosed, climate-controlled Sky Lounge and flexible open-plan layouts, the X95 fuses the space and luxury of a superyacht with the range and purpose of a compact explorer vessel. In fact, with a relatively high superstructure and vast glass panels, tempered by the use of long, elegant horizontal lines, her volume-optimised design brings with it a striking external aesthetic that almost feels like the pioneer for a fresh form of motor yacht.

In the sharing community of the 21st century, the financial aspect is easily resolved simply by dividing yacht ownership between several owners. However, well managed execution is crucial for smooth running and financial security, which is where all 55 years of Princess Motor Yacht Sales’ experience in the retail yachting industry steps in, with a rock solid ownership agreement that fairly and transparently divides the cost of the yacht and the running fees between buyers.

Each buyer purchases a percentage of the yacht and has that percentage of the eventual sale price returned to him when it is sold at the end of the agreement (normally four years). Running costs are also divided between owners and clearly set out at the outset of the agreement. For example, an eighth share of a Princess 64 berthed in Palma works out at £150,000 to purchase and £20,000/year to run. The only thing left to cover is fuel and provisioning whilst on board.

Which neatly brings us on to time. Most yacht owners lead busy lives and readily admit that time abroad is as rare as it is precious, which is why the four weeks a year that eighth share buys are probably a fair reflection of typical use of a wholly owned yacht. However more shares can be purchased if more time is needed.

Axopar co-founder Jan-Erik Viitala talks to the IBI about building the brand into an €80m-plus business this year and the secret to its success

We want to make a boat that has a very long lifespan. It’s easily repairable, useable after thousands of hours and still looks modern – Jan-Erik Viitala.

Finnish brand Axopar is revolutionising the boat business by adopting a ‘platform’ approach to model development. Debuting five new models at Düsseldorf in January, the builder has sold over 2,200 boats to date in more than 70 countries with another 500-plus on order. Its co-founder Jan-Erik Viitala talks to the IBI about building the brand into an €80m-plus business this year and the secret to its success.

Q. How does the year ahead look?

I’m really looking forward to 2020. We launched the new 37 on Saturday (the beginning of Düsseldorf boat show) and we had 100 signed customer orders even before the launch, thanks to our pre-marketing. We’ve been working closely with Mercury and Simrad on user-interfacing. We want to improve the intuitive functionality of the boats for our owners to help them become better boaters. We introduced our Axopar user interface to make boating easier and less intimidating for beginners. We have a clean helm and glass bridge project 1.0 and will have a 2.0 version ready for Cannes. 3.0 is already in our heads! It’s not just about a touch screen. We want a system that can educate and control the boat in a much deeper way than is currently available – make it much more like driving a car.

Q. How is the Axopar market evolving?

We’ve seen two big developments: the boat is increasingly being picked for charter – they have the right price point, usability and driver friendliness to make a good charter platform. They’re being used as VIP transfers for instance between luxury resorts. We’re also seeing them being used more and more as tenders – particularly in the 40m-50m superyacht sail sector. The Shadows are also being used by the owners on big superyachts – it’s a boat they can escape on with family and guests as they’re easy and fun to handle.

Q. What about your eco footprint?

We want to make a boat that has a very long lifespan. It’s easily repairable, useable after thousands of hours and still looks modern. We’ve really pushed the efficiencies of the hulls – the stepped hull is greener as lighter and you use less material – a new 37 with the latest Mercury V8s has up to 25% lower fuel consumption compared to the old 37 with Mercury L6s. Electric power is not viable at the moment, but we’re monitoring it.

Q. Will you be increasing production?

Today we’re building around 700 boats annually, thanks to the addition of a second OEM in northern Poland recently that’s enabled us to build an extra five 28s a week, and within the next six months from now, another five 37s a week. The 37 is key to the business model. It hits a sweet spot, with the same margins as the 28. It’s the product that’s enabled the company to grow. It’s also the right product to take outside of Europe where anything under 35ft is considered small. It can tackle oceans which is why Florida is by far our most successful sales region. Increasing our footprint in the US is where the major potential lies. Ultimately the goal is to build 1,000 boats a year, that would be a nice milestone.

Q. Will you be expanding the range from the current three lines and nine models?

We will refresh the 24ft soon and there will be a completely new product, the 45, which is already in the pipeline for a 2021 launch, but we don’t have plans to expand the range as such as the business model is based around platform thinking. We developed the 37, 28 and 24 platforms that we’re constantly renewing, instead of trying to make a uniform fleet like most other boatbuilders.

We think of ourselves more like BMW, which has a 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 series that it refreshes line by line every few years, without having to create a whole new family of cars in one go which would be financial suicide. A lot of boatbuilders are going to the wall because they build say a 28, then develop a 32 which they make look the same, and then a 38, 42 and so on, all designed to look like a family. The problem is by the time you’re launching your 42-footer it’s based on a platform, look and layout that’s already 5-7 years old. Then, when they do launch a radical, modern look, they find customers suddenly want the new look, so they have the mammoth job and cost of renewing an entire fleet.

To continue the car analogy, at the moment Axopar has say an Audi and a Porsche – is there room for a Bentley and VW on the platform, perhaps yes. On paper it’s simple, but in reality, the product development is horrific. There are so many variables you need to consider for the long term. The number one challenge was the hydrodynamics – the power versus weight. We’re getting the hang of it now – it never gets easy doing platform thinking, but you learn to think smarter.

It would expand over the years, with the Princess V65 in 2000, the Princess V70 in 2004 and the V78 in 2009, plus various MKII and MKIII models along the way, but at no point did it lose focus, either of its model range or of the core principles that defined its early designs – and the modern V-Class fleet presents ample proof of that. Even 26 years on, it retains a striking resemblance to the V Class line-up of the past, with six yachts from 40 to 78 feet and a very firm emphasis on style, handling and performance. Certainly, the development of vacuum infusion and the streamlining of production processes in line with the company’s commercial growth has enabled Princess to increase internal volumes and progressively upgrade the ergonomics of the living spaces. But it has also made each craft lighter, stronger, faster and more efficient, keeping driving dynamics at the heart of the V Class experience.

As regards each of the specific V Class models, it’s interesting to note that, while Princess has been busy in the last couple of years introducing debut models for the all-new X Class and R Class product lines, it has still found the capacity to dedicate some serious attention to the V Class. In fact, it’s fair to argue that, with a new Princess V40 in 2017 a new Princess V50, Princess V60 and Princess V65 in 2018 and a new Princess V55 and V78 in 2019, the entire product line now delivers a degree of technical and stylistic continuity that makes it more complete and more convincing than at any point in its history.

The Princess V40

The smallest V Class model is a vital boat in a very competitive sector and the early signs have been very positive. While its predecessor, the V39, won 2013 ‘Motorboat of the Year’ in the ‘Sports Cruiser up to 45 Feet’ category, the launch of the new V40 immediately saw it take victory in the same category at the Asia Boating Awards in Singapore. Equipped with twin Volvo Penta D6 340s for speeds approaching 40 knots, it features a sheltered cockpit dining station opposite a starboard wetbar with the option of a convertible stern bench for easy sunbathing aft. Down below, the master cabin in the bow is supplemented with a bright, full-beam twin; and the central saloon comes with a galley and a U-shaped diner that converts to a double berth for extra guests.

The Princess V50

While the external aesthetic of the Princess V50 reaffirms the bloodline it shares with the V40, the larger boat adds a pair of spacious ensuite double cabins, a more generous saloon that can also be specced as a third double cabin and the option of either an enclosed or an open configuration. In the former case, the main deck is split 50:50 between largely symmetrical inside and outside seating areas; and in the latter case, that openness is taken to quite a radical degree, courtesy of a huge canvas sunroof and a three-man starboard sun bed that extends the living space way out to the electro-hydraulic swim platform. In spite of its sporting ability, it remains one of the most flexible family cruising machines on the modern market.

The Princess V55

The main deck of the Princess V55 is clearly optimised for open boating. In the aft cockpit, the clever incorporation of the aft bench into the leading edge of the central sun lounger preserves generous external dining capacity while retaining easy freedom of movement and delivering the space beneath for a 3.45m tender garage. The partition between the aft deck and internal saloon can be all but eradicated courtesy of a drop-down patio door; and the wide-open main deck day spaces are bolstered by a foredeck seating and sunbathing zone. Down below, a full-beam ensuite master stateroom is supplemented with a double guest cabin with optional scissor berths, an additional port bathroom, a bunk cabin to starboard and an optional aft cabin for crew. And yet, as a V Class yacht, she balances her versatile main deck and seven-berth accommodation with some serious sporting credentials. Equipped with a pair of Volvo D13 1000s, you can expect a top end of around 37 knots.

The Princess V60

Like the smaller boats in the line, the V60’s use of cleverly retracting windows, doors and sunroofs enables you to enjoy protection when you need it and an open boating experience when you don’t. Powered by a pair of MAN V8 1200 engines, the 38-knot V60 is built to carry six guests in three large cabins – a full-beam stateroom, a guest double, a starboard twin and optional aft accommodation for crew. On the main deck, the two-level saloon comes with a casual seating area on the upper tier adjacent to the helm station, and a dining zone opposite a C-shaped galley on the lower tier. With the doors and windows opened, the aft galley integrates neatly with the central seating area of the external cockpit and the galley itself extends into the outdoor space by means of a fully equipped wet bar.

The Princess V65

On the main deck, the Princess V65 employs precisely the same layout principles as the V60, but scaled up to impressive effect. In particular there’s some useful extra space in the relaxed lounging area of the saloon’s upper tier, as well as in both the fore and aft sunbathing spaces. To preserve flexibility, the saloon can operate either as a climate-controlled sanctuary from the elements or it can be opened up via a vast sunroof and triple sliding doors. Down below, the Princess V65 adds a large transverse ensuite bathroom to distance the full-beam master cabin from the engine room; and it also expands sleeping capacity with the addition of a fourth cabin to port. Each of the cabins is bright and modern with plenty of light ingress from that trademark V Class hull windows. And while twin MAN V12-1400s will achieve around 38 knots, it’s her cruising efficiency as much as her outright performance that sets the Princess V65 apart.

The Princess V78

Even in the context of Princess’s current fleet, the V78 is a remarkable piece of work. On the main deck, the vast single-level saloon space comes with an aft galley and a selection of seating areas; and there’s also a superbly sociable arrangement for the helm, with an elevated L-shaped lounge seat to port, in the lee of the screen.

To further enhance sociability, the foredeck entertainment zone uses sunpads that can be converted to create aft-facing seats – and on the configurable aft deck, a central walkway with double sunpads and twin seating units on deck runners enables the furniture to be reconfigured for whatever kind of party the day demands. Down below, the master stateroom benefits from its own private staircase and there are three additional ensuite cabins, plus a twin crew cabin aft. And yet, despite the scale of the V78, this new flagship of the acclaimed V Class fleet does ample justice to the sporting prowess of her forebears with twin MAN V12-1900s for a remarkable top end of 39 knots.

A private syndicate is a group of people who decide to share the cost of buying and owning a boat – and whether you want to view that as multiplying your buying power by the number of shareholders or dividing your outgoings by the same, the merits of the approach are clear. The extra financial clout of your communal purse buys you the chance to source a larger, more capable and more desirable yacht, with premium options that have the potential to improve the boating experience. And when the agreed ownership period comes to an end, the extra regularity of use and the additional time, money and effort lavished on her maintenance by a committed syndicate of owners will often mean that depreciation is kept to a minimum. After all, not only will she achieve a strong selling price but, as one of four, six or eight parties, any loss is divided between you and your fellow shareholders.

A private syndicate does, however, require great care and consideration from all involved. In the first instance, you need to find a group of financially secure and like-minded friends who share your attitude to boating and who will be happy to be swayed by the group consensus on the nature of the boat, the spec, the cruising grounds and the schedule of usage. You need to ensure that your partners are as fastidious as you are in relation to leaving the boat in perfect condition after a week away with their families. You need to have a mechanism for protecting the interests of someone who might lose their allotted week through unscheduled repairs. And you need to commit to a contractual Shared Ownership Agreement to clarify everybody’s responsibilities, to eradicate any doubt or animosity and to put a procedure in place in the event that a member decides to sell his share.

Even then, however positive your collective intentions might be, a syndicate can be a tough thing to maintain. After all, it leaves all the logistical responsibilities for boat ownership in the hands of you and your partners and it also puts the onus on you to take a proactive role in protecting everyone else’s interests, as well as your own. Little wonder then that the number of dedicated companies offering professionally operated fractional ownership schemes has soared in the last ten years…

The professional scheme

If you want to ease the financial burden, increase your buying power, rid yourself of logistical complication and bring your outgoings more closely into line with the realistic patterns of your likely annual usage, there are now plenty of commercially operated fractional ownership schemes available. The idea is that a dedicated agency takes charge of everything from purchase, service, maintenance and storage to cleaning and even training – and all you have to do is pay a fee. In some cases (usually with smaller boats), that fee can take the form of a simple monthly payment over a set period of years. In others, it can involve an initial lump sum to fund the purchase of the boat followed by a regular monthly (or annual) fee for ongoing support, facilities and upkeep.

While the number of owners is usually between four and eight, it is often possible for a single owner to buy multiple shares if he thinks his likely regularity of use justifies it. But in all cases, at the end of the agreed period of joint ownership (usually four years) the boat tends to be sold and the proceeds split between the members in accordance with the size of each member’s share. Again, the logistics of prepping, marketing and selling the boat can often be taken on by the organising agency rather than the owners – and once the boat is sold, each member is then free to reinvest his share in a fresh four-year ownership programme with a new boat.

The YachtQuarters programme
